NF Chpyre

A well-known but often misunderstood genre of perfume, the Chypre, has more definitions and interpretations than any other style. Labdanum, oakmoss and patchouli should be present, alongside supporting ingredients chosen by the perfumer to take the composition in a certain direction. Here the direction is green and coniferous, with a dense heart of fir balsam, blue hemlock and Hojari frankincense.

This formula went through countless variations until the right palette had been resolved. Pairing the correct materials with each other is at the core of what this fragrance is about and any substitution would alter the final product in a significant way.

Fir balsam, for example, is a very selective ingredient that does not pair well with many other materials. Extensive testing was carried out to determine what blended well with it, to soften its rough edges and complement its forest floor character. This composition was a process of removal and simplification, ensuring the other materials had their own space to perform.

Herbal notes of clary sage, chamomile and galbanum support the cold-pressed bergamot and black spruce in the opening. A beautiful Bulgarian rose otto bridges everything together and blends perfectly with the coniferous heart. For the base, many types of labdanum, patchouli, vetiver and cedar were on hand during testing and each final selection was carefully matched to the heart accord. Treemoss was chosen over oakmoss for its wilder, less yielding nature, accentuating the perfume’s green character.

The fir balsam extraction used here is among the finest available and the same care was taken in sourcing the other key materials.
